The end of spring training is rapidly approaching. Some things are becoming a little more clear, either through cuts or the performances of the players themselves. There is still much to be determined, namely the outfield.

The Dodgers are halfway through spring training and their All-Star shortstop has yet to take the field defensively. In the games Corey Seager has appeared, he has done so solely as a designated hitter. While the Dodgers have plans for him to start playing the field next week, we should look at the options that Los Angeles has should his elbow discomfort amount to something more.

This year feels slightly different in one area for the Dodgers. In the last couple years, the Dodgers have had an excess of starting pitchers. Not necessarily pitchers that were top-of-the-line, but pitchers they thought maybe could help them throughout the year. They knew they had issues, and they were just hoping for the best. But this year there doesn’t seem to be a true excess of pitching waiting in the wings to step up if one or two pitchers happen to go down.

A sickness has been sweeping the Dodgers clubhouse, causing as many as 25 players to be sent home from Camelback Ranch the last few days. Thursday’s scheduled starting pitcher Ross Stripling was scratched due to the as-of-now mysterious illness. Manny Banuelos instead gets the start, a pitcher this writer has never heard of.

Here is Northeast Pennsylvania, it is cold and rainy. But in Arizona, it’s warmer, and Dodger baseball games are being played again. Meaningless games, but games, nonetheless. It does a body good. I know so many of us are still hungover from the World Series, but there’s just something about the first game, hearing Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser again, seeing those men on the field, that maybe we have hope again.

The front office has made it abundantly clear this off-season that they’re not going to make any big splashy moves, or add any money to their payroll. They like the team where it is, and they’re setting it up nicely for the future. But, the Tampa Bay Rays seem to be having a fire sale, and why wouldn’t the Dodgers at least want to check in on how they could acquire Chris Archer and Kevin Kiermaier.

After one of the saddest and longest winters ever for Dodgers fans, the end is finally here. Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow to Camelback Ranch.
