If we all took a brief moment to drift back to this past offseason, many would find it tough to believe that the Dodgers are already dipping into the plentiful stash of pitching at the Triple-A level. After all, at the point when the calendar flipped to 2016, quite a few of the more impulsive fans were hastily calling for a trade of lefty starter Alex Wood.

Friday evening was business as usual for Dodgers‘top pitching prospect Julio Urias. This time, the scouting director, the pitching coordinator or whomever dictates orders to OKC manager Bill Haselman, only let Urias work five full innings against the Salt Lake Bees. All three of the 19-year-old’s previous starts in the month of May lasted six full innings.

Although it seems like he’s been around forever, it’s difficult to believe that lefty phenom Julio Urias is still only 19 years of age. Having begun his professional career with Low-A Great Lakes in 2013, the Dodgers‘ top pitching prospect has zipped to the peak of Triple-A Oklahoma City‘s starting rotation in less than three full seasons, and could be primed to make a big league appearance sooner than many think.

Julio Urias continued his domination of the Pacific Coast League on Saturday night, throwing six scoreless innings while surrendering only three hits and two walks, as Oklahoma City defeated Las Vegas, 1-0.

The 19-year-old southpaw struck out six opposing batters and extended his scoreless innings streak to 22 consecutive innings. He threw a total of 82 pitches, 51 of which were strikes. Urias also induced two double plays and picked two runners off first base — his third and fourth pickoffs over his last three starts.

If the current five members of the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ starting rotation can find a way to battle and stay effective for about another four to six weeks, veteran help may be arriving to provide some much needed vigor and support. However, if one or more of the present starters takes a turn for the worse, the club may have to turn to the farm as an alternative in the interim.

Several changes may be coming for the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff in the foreseeable future. With the peak of the hot stove season still about a month and change away, the club will utilize other avenues — most specifically, waiver claims, players returning from the disabled list, and promotions from the farm system — in hopes of creating a more effective corps of throwers.

While the 2016 season is only 28-games-old and still extremely young, the Los Angeles Dodgers are beginning to establish a bit of a defined identity on paper as several areas of weakness and need are already becoming visible.

A few other departments could actually be considered worse off than the starting rotation, yet in order for the Dodgers to demonstrate their ability to contend throughout the year, one or two starting pitchers may need to be added sooner rather than later.
