Dodgers Roster: The Current State of the Starting Rotation

Every time the starting pitching staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers takes a step forward, it seems to take a step back not long after.

This is obviously the case for many MLB clubs over the course of a grueling 162-game season. However, for the Dodgers, it feels like it’s been a long time since they’ve had a starting five at full power.

Dodgers News and Notes – Kershaw Returns and Other Injury Updates

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been cruising along as of late, winning five of their last six, all against NL West.

Along the way, the have opened a six game lead in the division. Taking three of four from the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers have effectively buried the team to the south, who are 13 games back. They also took both games in Arizona, and the Diamondbacks now find themselves 11 games out of first.

Dodgers Injury Notes: Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Daniel Hudson and More

Although it remains to be seen how exactly the trades the Los Angeles Dodgers made at this summer’s deadline will affect the club in the coming months, it’s probably safe to say that none of those moves were overwhelmingly impactful. And, although the club, still has a ton of players on the 60-man injury list, most of those placements will carry into the winter.

Clayton Kershaw, Will Smith Join 2023 National League All-Star Team

Despite an ugly series this weekend against the lackluster Kansas City Royals — in particular the lack of offense and ineffective pitching in the finale — the was a sliver of good news for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

The MLB named pitcher Clayton Kershaw and catcher Will Smith as All Stars, allowing them to join teammates Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez, who were all voted in as National League starters on Thursday. For the fourth straight season, the Dodgers will have five or more representatives at the game and the third-highest total of players going to Seattle, behind the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers.

Dodgers Roster: The Current State of the Starting Rotation

For all the injury turmoil the Los Angeles Dodgers had to deal with in the first half of the season, the team’s starting rotation isn’t in that bad of shape. Obviously, there’s still a long way to go to the playoffs, but there are seemingly a few legitimate options now that didn’t exist in the early stages of the year.

Of course, there are probably some other areas — like the bullpen and offense — that need to be addressed before the club even thinks about the postseason. However, for now, let’s take a close look at the current rotation to see how it stacks up.

Dodgers Sweep Cardinals at Home, Prepare for Phillies to Finish Homestand

Chris Taylor went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Noah Syndergaard earned his first win of the season, propelling the Dodgers to a 6-3 home win on Sunday against the Cardinals and securing the series sweep.

Aside from Clayton Kershaw’s sparkling performance on Saturday, there really weren’t any major signs that the Dodgers are changing course from an average-performing team to an excellent one. The Cardinals fell to 10-19 on the season and fifth place in the NL Central, suggesting that the Los Angeles sweep isn’t as significant as some pundits make it out to be.

Dodgers Take Weekend Series from Cubs in Chicago

Mookie Betts went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI and Clayton Kershaw threw six strong innings to propel the Los Angeles Dodgers to a victory on Sunday, securing a much-needed series win against a high-quality National League opponent.

The lone scar of the series was a 14-0 shellacking on Friday, a game in which the Los Angeles offense was completely dormant against veteran starter Drew Smyly.

Dodgers News and Notes – Kershaw Gets Win 200, Depth Woes and More

We as Los Angeles Dodgers fans are so lucky to be watching greatness every five to six days and on Tuesday night, Clayton Kershaw showed us exactly why.

Kershaw turned in a vintage performance for his 200th career win, going 7.0 scoreless innings, striking out nine and walking none. After Jason Heyward bobbled a line drive to right field, allowing the batter to reach third on the very first at bat of the game, Kershaw proceeded to strike out the next three, stranding that runner. He didn’t allow anyone else past second the rest of the game.

Dodgers Prospect Watch: What Lies Ahead for Ryan Pepiot?

One of the first evaluations almost every Dodgers fan makes heading into Cactus League play is the quality of the major league starting rotation. Los Angeles is almost always in the MLB Top 10 to start the year, but more times than not, the starting five has an entirely different look as the home stretch of the regular season approaches.

The 2023 campaign probably will be no different.
