And just like that, here we are. The Los Angeles Dodgers are once again Champions of the NL West, and poised for another World Series run. And once again, Dodger fans know that what happened in the regular season doesn’t mean much if they still don’t get that elusive ring.
When you have the best record in the majors, you have the luxury of letting players rest whenever the manager sees fit. After all, the only thing on the line was the Dodgers’ streak of winning series this season.
Normally when the pitching staff of the Dodgers gives up four runs over nine full innings, there’s no reason for concern, as the team’s potent offense is strong enough to cruise past such a deficit.
The Dodgers have always been the front runners when it come to using analytics to better their baseball team. Using the shift and platooning are just a few of the ways the teams has tried to use statistics to their advantage.
A few hours before the first pitch of Tuesday’s game against the Rays, skipper Dave Roberts suggested to reporters that the Dodgers are toying with the idea of using an “opener” in the 2019 playoffs when the need arises for a fourth starter in the rotation.
It’s a testament to how compelling this NL playoff chase has been that there are five days remaining in the regular season and only one team has guaranteed themselves a playoff berth.
The baseball postseason sure is a funny thing. While the long layoff time between series could be an issue for the Dodgers in the end, I’m glad that they’ve avoided any of the drama that has been going on then the other divisional series so far.
