It almost feels like it’s becoming a tradition during the offseason to write a short little story about Alex Wood, discussing how he fits into the Dodgers‘ pitching staff for the upcoming campaign. Next thing you know, management and trainers will be telling reporters that southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu is at his peak physically, and is ready to take on a heavy workload during Cactus League play.

Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go, there will be trouble
And if I stay it will be double

There seems to be a prevailing thought amongst Dodgers fans that the team is not going to spend money and remain as is, missing out on re-signing big players again. The new CBA agreement has put a serious hit on the Dodgers’ payroll budget, unless they want to add to their spending by paying a bunch of taxes. Which, presumably, they would not want to do.

With a potential collective bargaining agreement forecast to dominate baseball news over the next several days, many fans are guessing that both the free agent and trade markets may turn into a frenzy if indeed a mutual pact is reached. One key component of the agreement could be the increase of the luxury tax threshold, allowing clubs across the league to conceivably increase payroll another $11 million before being penalized with a tax. Such an addendum could certainly provide the Dodgers with a little bit more breathing room when assembling the club’s player personnel for 2017 and beyond.

As frequently as we’ve mentioned the need for the Dodgers to net a quality, top-of-the-rotation arm this winter to compliment resident ace Clayton Kershaw in the starting rotation, the task is much easier discussed than accomplished. When the dust eventually settles in the spring, if prudent, the club may have to wait until the 2017-18 offseason to land somebody worth a hefty price tag.
