Considering the manner in which his 2016 campaign came to an undesirable close, many fans of the Dodgers were not overwhelmingly excited in November when starting pitcher Scott Kazmir chose not to opt out of his current contract and remain with Los Angeles in 2017. Yet after showing a few glimpses of his former successful self in the early portion of last season, Kazmir definitely has the potential to bolster and strengthen the Dodgers’ rotation if he can stay healthy and maintain consistent mechanics throughout the year.

While there’s definitely enough time for the front office crew of the Dodgers to sneak in another roster addition or two before the beginning of spring training, the starting pitching department probably isn’t an area on the agenda to upgrade, as management is already challenged with the task of selecting a group of five pitchers to form a rotation from potentially ten or so healthy arms.

While it was certainly a foregone conclusion that Scott Kazmir would choose not to opt out of his current contract with the Dodgers and remain in Los Angeles next season, many fans of the club took to social media on Monday to express their disappointment with his decision to stay anyway, perhaps looking ahead to what could be a near identical starting rotation in 2017.

A Very Preliminary Guess at the Dodgers’ 2017 Starting Rotation

With the way the injury bug devastatingly ripped into the Dodgers‘ 2016 pitching staff, it’s almost futile to even make a generalized guess at a working rotation before the winter months fall upon us. However, just for the sake of having a starting point and an impetus into November, we thought a cursory list may be worthwhile if only to create a perspective for discussion during the Hot Stove season.

Whenever the front office group of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been faced with any type of impactful decision facing the 25-man roster during the 2016 season, it’s very safe to say that the crew almost always takes the subtle approach, leaving no stones unturned while doing all the required homework; yet it sometimes seems as though their thinking is totally outside the box compared to the average fan’s typical perspective.

To say that Scott Kazmir‘s rehab start for Oklahoma City on Wednesday evening “didn’t go so well” would probably be a bit of an understatement.

Early reports from the clubhouse after the game indicated that Kazmir was suffering the same types of neck and rib cage pain that initially landed him on the disabled list last month. The 32-year-old southpaw was removed from the playoff opener against Nashville with just two outs in the first inning. During the struggle, Kazmir hit two batters, walked two more, and gave up a home run before making way to righty Lisalverto Bonilla. OKC would make an effort to battle back from the early deficit, but eventually fell to the Sounds, 10-7.
