What Exactly Do the Dodgers Have in Yu Darvish?

When the Dodgers snagged Yu Darvish in the waning moments before the 2017 non-waiver trade deadline, there was a mixed reaction among the more educated fans of the club, especially when considering his two-inning, 10-earned run debacle against the Marlins just days before. However, the 31-year-old Japanese righty seemingly put that entire mess to rest after he threw seven shutout innings in his Dodgers debut against the Mets, striking out 10 batters and only surrendering three hits and a walk on August 4.

Dodgers Playoff Roster: Piecing Together a Functional Bullpen

As the month of September is now upon us, and despite the foregone conclusion that the Dodgers will capture their fifth consecutive NL West division crown in the coming weeks, there really hasn’t been much discussion about a prospective playoff roster. Subjectively, it’s probably a lot better that way, because the next four weeks will be an audition of sorts for some areas of the roster, and the bullpen is shaping up to be a place that’s potentially loaded with surprises.

The Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday reinstated left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw from the 10-day disabled list, recalled infielder/outfielder Rob Segedin from Triple-A Oklahoma City, selected the contracts of outfielder Alex Verdugo and infielder/outfielder O’Koyea Dickson from OKC and reinstated outfielder Andre Ethier from the 60-day disabled list.

Dodgers News: Kershaw’s Return, Roster Expansion, Losing Streak & More

As I was watching the game on Wednesday, one of the announcers (I think Orel Hershiser, but my apologies if it wasn’t) made a flip remark about Clayton Kershaw being the stopper, brought in to stop losing streaks. And I thought, “Oh goodness, it’s been three games so far, sure, but no way they’ll need him to stop a five game losing streak.”

The Current State of the Dodgers Starting Rotation

At this particular juncture of the 2017 campaign, it’s a bit difficult to provide a general outlook regarding the starting rotation of the Dodgers, mainly because of its present instability. Yet, although the pitching hasn’t been the sole culprit of the club’s first four-game losing streak since May of 2016, it has indeed been ugly as of late, especially in the current series against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The Dodgers Have a Depth Problem, but It’s Only Going to Help Them in the Postseason

I’ve never looked at the roster of a playoff contender and seen any tough choices to make. I’ve never had to look at a teams outfield, and figure out who should play left field because usually there’s a clear answer. Not for the 2017 Dodgers. In the postseason, managers want to put their “A-Team” on the field, the problem is, the Dodgers have quite a few combinations of a championship caliber team, but it’s the best problem to have — it’s why they’re likely to succeed in the 2017 playoffs.

Dodgers Bullpen: Edward Paredes Vying for Playoff Roster Spot, Conceivably

At the beginning of 2017 spring training, the bullpen of the Los Angeles Dodgers appeared as if it was in outstanding shape, especially in terms of having several quality lefty arms at its disposal. However, as the season began to take shape, so did the landscape of the relief corps. Grant Dayton was never quite the same as he was in 2016, and eventually fell victim to a ligament tear, which would ultimately end his season. Adam Liberatore, who was one of several workhorses in the relief crew last year, was hampered by injuries for most of the current campaign. And Luis Avilan, well, is Luis Avilan.

Dodgers Roster: Player Reinforcements Are Coming Very Soon

The Dodgers start the last week in August with a day off, and maybe it’s a good time for it. The offense sure seems tired. Almost no-hit yesterday, and no runs scored Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
