As the Los Angeles Dodgers begin the final stretch of their 2025 season, a familiar question is surfacing once again: Should Mookie Betts return to right field? While manager Dave Roberts has dismissed any concrete plans for now, recent defensive — and offensive — struggles in the outfield corners are making this conversation impossible to ignore.

With the team’s outfield ranking just 19th among MLB clubs in total wins above replacement and 22nd in defensive rating, the Dodgers could conceivably benefit from some position shifting.

Dodgers Drop Weekend Series in Philadelphia, Send Blake Snell to Injured List

After one of the most sizzling starts in recent team history, the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped two games to the Philadelphia Philles in a three-game weekend set, falling to 9-2 on the year amid an East Coast road trip.

Sunday’s finale was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Dodgers jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame after Teoscar Hernandez hit his first long ball of the afternoon. In the bottom of the third, Los Angeles starter Tyler Glasnow lost his command, walking the bases loaded before first baseman Bryce Harper singled to put the Phillies on the board. The biggest blow came after Glasnow was replaced by lefty Alex Vesia, who promptly surrendered a grand slam to outfielder Nick Castellanos, capping off a six-run frame for Philadelphia.

Dodgers’ Lineup Returns to Full Power with Teoscar Hernandez

The Los Angeles Dodgers made another move to bolster their player roster on Friday by reportedly signing righty-hitting outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to a multi-year contract. The deal is evidently for three years and $66 million with an option for a fourth year, plus a signing bonus.

Dodgers Roster: Early Thoughts on 2025 Outfield

As the MLB hot stove continues to percolate, there are still a slew of factors that could affect how the Opening Day roster for the Los Angeles Dodgers shapes up in 2025. More specifically, there are various scenarios that could affect where some players appear regularly on the field.

What we know for certain, as far as position players go, is that Shohei Ohtani will do the bulk of the designated hitting, Freddie Freeman will be at first base, Will Smith will be behind the plate and newly acquired Michael Conforto will see time at the corner outfield spots. It’s also highly likely that Max Muncy will be the club’s regular third baseman.
