Just How Good is the Dodgers’ Starting Rotation?

There’s very little doubt that the Dodgers have among the deepest pools of pitchers to choose from when building their everyday starting rotation, if there is such a thing these days. Yet, with all the depth at almost every single level of the organization, many who follow the team closely wonder if the quality of starting pitching is good enough to perform successfully through the entire regular season and into the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday selected the contract of right-hander Brandon Morrow and placed left-handed pitcher Alex Wood on the 10-day disabled list with left SC joint inflammation in his neck/upper-back area. Wood’s stay on the disabled list can be retroactive to May 27, if needed.

Dodgers Rotation: Even Clayton Kershaw Is Entitled to an Occasional Off-Day

In last Friday’s column, I talked about the unpredictability of baseball. This series with the Chicago Cubs was no different. It made me think of the intro to ESPN’s 30 for 30: “What if I told you the Dodgers would host the Cubs for three games, and the only pitcher Chicago would score runs off of would be Clayton Kershaw?”

Dodgers Roster: A Few Early Season Surprises

I think if I had to name the one thing I love the most about baseball, it’s that it just so darn unpredictable. Almost a third of the way into the season, there are quite a few things that no fan of the Dodgers could have predicted.

Dodgers Hope to Carry Momentum Through Current Homestand

1-qJWeLVHVucamJOcaV_GxhA

The high-powered Dodgers offense had a very good weekend at home, scoring a total of 26 runs, and they didn’t score less than six runs in any one game. Even though the beginning of Saturday’s game looked as though it may be bad, even possibly a no-hitter, the offense battled back to score six runs. Invariably. that was not enough to win the game. However, the Dodgers still took three of four from the struggling Marlins.

Instead of putting together our normal weekend injury report, we thought perhaps a more interesting approach would be looking at a few of the positives that have resulted for the Dodgers from several of the unfortunate injuries that have occurred during the first six weeks of the season.

Injuries Continue to Haunt Dodgers

It just doesn’t seem that the Dodgers can catch a break. On the same night that saw Adrian Gonzalez return from his first-ever stint on the disabled list, it appears that the Dodgers might lose their All-Star caliber third baseman Justin Turner.

Not long after we began a little discussion involving a few of the bullpen’s high-risk pieces, the Dodgers on Tuesday reinstated left-handed pitcher Rich Hill from the 10-day disabled list and optioned lefty reliever Grant Dayton to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Dodgers Head to San Francisco After Missed Opportunities in Colorado

Hindsight is always 20/20. Of course. But I bet that Dave Roberts wishes he would’ve pulled a different play in the top of the first inning yesterday. Instead of having Chris Taylor swing away, he called for a sacrifice squeeze. The Dodgers already had two runs in, and two runners on base. Instead of getting to the rookie pitcher early, Taylor hit into a inning ending double-play where Utley was tagged out trying to go home and Yasmani Grandal was tagged trying to head into third.

With the return of lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu against the Rockies in Denver on Thursday night, and the prospective reactivation of veteran southpaw Rich Hill during the Giants series next week in San Francisco, the starting rotation of the Los Angeles Dodgers is about to get seven pitchers deep.
