The last time Zach McKinstry made an MLB appearance before his oblique strain on April 20, the Dodgers were in control of the National League West with a 14-4 record. The Giants were in second place at 11-6, and the Padres were in third, hovering right around the .500 mark at 10-9.
During this 2021 season, it has been quite the roller coaster for the Dodgers, and yet we are only still in the month of May. A fast start followed by a domino effect of injuries and a rough losing stretch in which the Dodgers lost 15 out of 20 games has been the storyline so far.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been hit increasingly hard with injuries so far this season. After only a month and a half into the season, the Dodgers have 14 players who they thought would figure prominently in the season on the injured list.
As of Sunday morning, there was no additional news on the exact condition of Corey Seager’s hand, aside from the fact that X-rays administered on Saturday night showed a fracture. Either way, the untimely injury will cause yet another shakeup to an already fluid active roster. Including the four players on the 60-day injured list, the Los Angeles Dodgers will have a total of 13 players on the shelf at the start of Sunday’s finale against the Marlins.
(Update: Reports Sunday afternoon indicated that Seager fractured the fifth metacarpal in his right hand, but surgery will not be necessary. There has yet to be any estimated timetables announced for a prospective return. Keibert Ruiz has taken Seager’s spot on the active roster for Sunday’s game.)
For most of Saturday morning, numerous reports around the MLB suggested a possibility of Albert Pujols rejoining his former club, the St. Louis Cardinals, to finish out the remainder of the 2021 season. However, baseball fans were hugely surprised not long after lunchtime when news broke about the future hall of famer reaching a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
For the first time in nearly a month, the Los Angeles Dodgers have won a series. It came by a two-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners at home, perhaps sparking a turnaround for the team. The late three-run homer by Gavin Lux on Tuesday night can very well be the turning point for that frustrating couple of weeks.
Things are maybe, possibly, starting to turn around for the Los Angeles Dodgers. They won their first series after losing five in a row, the short series that it was. They also won two games in a row for the first time in almost a month.
No doubt, the 413-foot bomb that Gavin Lux launched in the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s victory was one of the most clutch moments the team has seen in weeks. While there have been a few other bright spots here and there offensively, the Dodgers just might find a way to put together a string of success should more of these huge plays occur in critical moments.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are back home after a ten-game road trip in which they went 2-8, a period in which they’ve also lost 15 out of their last 20 games. In the two games in which they won, the Dodger offense exploded for double-digit runs. Other than that, it’s been quiet.
