For Dodgers and Their Rivals, Velocity Is Always a Wild Card

Here’s a history lesson (I will keep it very short, I promise).

Way back in the 1930s, there was an outstanding St. Louis Cardinals pitcher named Dizzy Dean. Dean was a great pitcher, racking up 120 wins, 970 strikeouts, 19 shutouts and 30 saves while averaging a ridiculous 306 innings per season from 1932 to 1936. He led the league in strikeouts four consecutive seasons. Dean won 30 games, the National League’s Most Valuable Player award and the World Series in 1934.

Dodgers Slightly Adjust Lineup to Face Justin Verlander in Game 6

The good news is the World Series has now shifted back to Los Angeles where the Dodgers were stellar during the regular season and have been nearly untouchable in the playoffs. The bad news is there’s no margin for error, as the Astros are just a single win away from a World Championship. On top of that, Houston is sending veteran righty Justin Verlander to the bump, who has been absolutely outstanding during the 2017 postseason.

Will a Major Trade Acquisition Upset Dodgers’ Current Team Chemistry?

Although we don’t yet know who the Dodgers will ultimately end up acquiring at the non-waiver trade deadline, it’s seems as though the Justin Verlander talks have cooled down, as it appears that the Los Angeles front office is more interested in acquiring Sonny Gray or Yu Darvish.

Dodgers Roster: The Difficulty of Acquiring a Top-Tier Starting Pitcher

As frequently as we’ve mentioned the need for the Dodgers to net a quality, top-of-the-rotation arm this winter to compliment resident ace Clayton Kershaw in the starting rotation, the task is much easier discussed than accomplished. When the dust eventually settles in the spring, if prudent, the club may have to wait until the 2017-18 offseason to land somebody worth a hefty price tag.
