As there’s exactly 30 days remaining before pitchers and catchers show up for spring camp in Glendale, the Dodgers have only two left-handed hitting second base options that are anywhere near the big league level—Willie Calhoun, who hasn’t even gotten his feet wet at the Triple-A, and Jose Miguel Fernandez, a Cuban infielder who signed last week for $200,000 and probably hasn’t yet arrived stateside. In the meantime, Chase Utley is still lurking in the dark corners of the free agent market, while many fans of the Boys in Blue continue to wonder if he’ll be part of the squad in 2017.

Perhaps the Dodgers were hoping to make a trade with the Twins by now, clearing out a few spots on the 40-man roster in the process. Or maybe team representatives are waiting until the honeymoon is over, permitting time for a physical examination and allowing agents and lawyers to gather in one place to review the contract. Quite possibly, the front office could be mulling over which player to outright to the minors, creating one opening on the big league roster. Either way, at least one corresponding move will need to be made before star reliever Kenley Jansen officially signs his name to his new five-year, $80 million dollar deal.

Quite obviously, the Dodgers‘ ties to the Minnesota Twins and second baseman Brian Dozier have dominated most of the Los Angeles baseball news for much of the current offseason. In addition to Dozier, rumors surrounding Ian Kinsler of the Tigers and Brandon Phillips of the Reds swirled early during the Hot Stove, but ultimately lost any type of momentum due to the potential complexities of completing a trade.

Before the Dodgers can “officially” ink both reliever Kenley Jansen and infielder Justin Turner to their new respective deals, the front office crew will need to create at least one open roster spot, opening the door for some type of personnel move in the very near future.

One of the sticking points was the inclusion of Jose De Leon. News broke today that the Dodgers may now be willing to include him.

Depending on how the dust settles on all of the Dodgers‘ trade ventures at the end of the winter, Los Angeles should have at least several viable options to hit at the top of the batting order in 2017, creating more mathematically favorable alternatives when writing out the lineup cards.

There seems to be a prevailing thought amongst Dodgers fans that the team is not going to spend money and remain as is, missing out on re-signing big players again. The new CBA agreement has put a serious hit on the Dodgers’ payroll budget, unless they want to add to their spending by paying a bunch of taxes. Which, presumably, they would not want to do.
Even though many of the finer details of the new collective bargaining agreement are still being disclosed and analyzed, the Dodgers may be on the verge of making several moves via the free agent or trade markets now that a set of regulations and guidelines has been established for the next five years.
