With less than 24 hours remaining before the 2019 trade deadline, it’s hard to gauge whether the Dodgers will ultimately stand pat with their current roster or make a splash with some sort of high-impact type of deal.
Skipper Dave Roberts over the past few days has been preparing those close to the team for a potential letdown, insisting that regardless of what happens by Wednesday, the team will be poised to make another successful championship run. He also reiterated that whatever potential deals are discussed, the end result will need to heavily benefit the organization without sacrificing the most valued prospects on the farm.
In other words, Andrew Friedman and his crew will be very sensible and judicious about what they do.
“Where we’re at right now, it just puts us in position not to reach, and not to do something that not only compromises this year potentially, but in years to come,” Roberts explained.
Rumblings are still circulating about the Dodgers being tied to flame-throwing lefty Felipe Vazquez of the Pirates. However, it’s still not known whether or not GM Neal Huntington will pull the trigger in a deal. Nevertheless, there were some rumors reported on Monday that Pittsburgh may conceivably be interested in a package surrounding prized infielding prospect Gavin Lux, which likely is a deal-breaker.
Additionally, there are whispers about the Dodgers showing interest in New York reliever Edwin Diaz. Logic suggests that the Mets might want a huge haul to part with the closer, considering what they gave up to snag him last December. Whatever the case may be, the 25-year-old native of Puerto Rico has a 4.95 ERA, a 3.83 FIP and a 1.450 WHIP over 44 appearances and an even 40 innings pitched this season.
There’s also some chatter linked to righty reliever Shane Greene of Detroit, but some folks familiar with the situation in the Midwest seem to feel that the Tigers might want to let go of several players in the same package, hoping to score a deal that brings in a handful of quality prospects in return.
In other news, the Dodgers announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin and optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Sborz to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Gonsolin, 25, rejoins the team for the second time this season. In his only previous action, the right-hander made his MLB debut in a start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 26. He pitched 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, six runs (four earned) with three strikeouts in a losing effort. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he has made 12 starts, posting a 1-4 record with a 4.95 ERA (20 ER/36.1 IP) and 41 strikeouts.
The 25-year-old Sborz has appeared in two games in two stints with the Dodgers, allowing six runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. On the season, he is 3-3 with a 4.54 ERA (19 ER/37.2 IP) and 51 strikeouts in 34 games for OKC, including a 2-0 mark with a 2.61 ERA (3 ER/10.1 IP) and 14 strikeouts in his last 10 games.
As far as the middle game of the series goes in Denver on Tuesday, Julio Urias gets the start for Los Angeles, squaring off against Colorado southpaw Kyle Freeland.
First pitch is 5:40 PM Los Angeles time.

Well, a couple home runs from unexpected places.

They have time Rich, and outside of Machado, AF has done a lot of deals at the last minute. Remember, this guy is not going to make a trade that drains the farm system. When they got Darvish, the trade was actually announced 15 minutes AFTER the deadline. They submitted the paper work maybe 10 minutes before the deadline. Gonsolin is mowing them down tonight. Looks like we have a quality are in this kid.

Wow, surprised the padres gave up Reyes, he looks like he could be a pretty good player in the future, they must really like this Trammell kid.

The kid they got in the deal, Trammell is supposed to be one of the best prospects at that position, and they have a glut of outfielders. Reyes hitting for a lot of power, but not so much for average. They are also locked into Myers contract, so I would guess they are trying to thin things out and have enough playing time for all.

Well hello there Tony Gonsulin it’s nice to meet you. I think you’ll be staying in the bullpen from now on, thanks.

In the very likely event that the Dodgers can’t make a deal because teams just want insane returns in trade who is all for bringing May and Gonsulin up and sticking them in the bullpen? We could do a lot worse than a 100mph fireballer and a big, tall redhead with a 95mph sinker.

Reds will flip Bauer…. right?
May can get Major League hitters out now. He will be on the team next year. Gonsolin was my sleeper pick for this year. I like him. He’s got a 70 grade splitter already. Just needs to spot his stuff.

I think the reds think they can win next season, this trade was for next year, OR they’re willing to do anything to get rid of Puig, been there, done that.
LikeLike
I heard he could make as much as $18 million next year. Do the Reds really believe they will win a playoff spot with him? I’m pretty sure they could get at the minimum 2 Major League ready team controlled players from more than 1 playoff bound team. Their phones are ringing as we type.

Has nothing to do with Puig as a team mate. He has been great in their club house according to all the story’s out of Cincinnati. Probably because he is a free agent and nothing more. The Reds are loaded with outfielders.

If the dodgers don’t make a trade they’ll have to bring someone up, because what they have now in the bull pen is not working often enough.

They do not have anyone at AAA that is that kind of pitcher, so they deal for help or stand pat. Quackenbush has been doing well down there, but OKC does not really have a pitcher pitching that great. There are a couple with MLB experience, but nothing that makes you excited.

Not sure doing well in Oklahoma translates.
What’s wrong with Ferguson? Is it organic or mental? We could use some August innings out of him.

Wasn’t thinking of the Money scoop, you have a point, 18mil is a lot of money for the reds to pay out next year.

I heard Rosenthal saying the Reds like him as part of a Big 3 there. If it doesn’t work I suppose they could trade him at the deadline next year. I thought for sure New York or Boston would want him. Wonder how he feels about Cincinnati. Probably the same way Stroman feels about the Mets.

Except Stroman is actually from NY while Bauer is from SoCal so has no affinity for Cincinnati. I would guess that he’s not a happy camper right now. Dealing with Bauer is hard enough when he’s happy. I think they’ll take a lot of calls this morning and if they get a deal they like they’ll flip him.

I read somewhere earlier this morning that Gonsolin has yet to issue a big league walk. That could be a good sign, depending on how you look at it.

He is just being sent back so he can start regularly. Something he is not going to do up with the Dodgers. And I do not think he will be traded. Thor off of the market as of this morning. The trade options are shrinking.
LikeLike
Starter options are shrinking but there are still 27 relievers that AF might trade for and every one of those teams might be asking for Gonsolin. He would be smart not to board that plane in Denver until after 1:00 Pacific time. He might not be headed to OKC.

That could be true, a trade just went down, Brewers sent Aguilar to the Rays for Faria. The Dodgers have a lot of young arms teams want.

Yes, Stroman is from NY but the Mets are not the NY team he wanted to go to.
Bauer might be less temperamental on a team that was more organized and needed his help for a push to the finish line THIS year. You think he’s going to be happy pitching for a team going nowhere and that team is in Ohio? You ever been to Ohio? He’s got nothin to pitch for this year in that town. Houston, Boston or New York should do whatever it takes to get him out of Cincinnati.

Ferguson has been meh since he came back. So I do not think that kid has closer stuff, He pitched decent in a game where they were being blown out, but in pressure situations this year, he has been no where near as good as he was last year. Being good at AAA means pretty much nothing unless you are a phenom and it gets you to the majors.

Ok Bear, this is a read for crusty old coots like you and me. xwOBA. Basically uses algorithms to determine what could be expected from contact. It’s the stat du jour for them relievers Andrew is looking at:
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/expected_statistics?type=pitcher&year=2019&position=&team=&min=100
Baez and Garcia show up on it as does Hill. The guys we want? Giles, Smith….. Amir Garrett… Díaz an Vázquez are on the list. But so are other possibilities.

Hog wash, No amount of algorithms can predict doo doo. Just like you cannot predict a WS winner simply because they get a premium reliever. They never take into consideration the mind set of the traded player. Look how bad Reddick was after the trade… I will never believe in all that crap….crusty maybe, old fer sure, a coot? Those are fightin words there bud! LOL

Bear and I have been going around for quite a while now. He can say whatever he wants to me. I know where his heart is. His head is often up his ass, but he’s got integrity and that’s good enough for me.
While on the subject of cranial insertion, let me aks you this Bear….. you’re about to play a gig for the wedding of 22 year olds. Do you play the same way you would for the crowd at a 50 year reunion? Of course not, unless you want your ass booed off the stage. Get current man. That expected contact figure is very telling. A lot goes into it, most notably how hard and how often do these guys get hit. Both FIP and xOBA are not the future, they are the now.
Old dogs can be taught new tricks. You just have be patient with them and convince them it’s for their own good.

For your information, I have never had my head up my ass….not remotely. About your question, only a moron who was my age would agree to play a wedding reception for 22 year olds. And when I play, I do what I do best. No half measures or trying to please some kids who would have no frippen idea what I was doing. That’s integrity for you. I am not playing that rap crap or hip hop.

Now I’m gonna call bullshit on that Bear. If Bruno Mars was playing a wedding for a billionaires kid and asked you join him as background guitar for that night, I’m certain you would say “hell yes”. If you didn’t that would qualify you for Head in Ass of the year award.
By the way, I use head in ass as a synonym for obtuse. I know at your age, even with the yoga I know you don’t do, you would never be physically able to stick your head up your own butt. But it’s worth talking about it just for the visual it brings to the people reading here. You know I’m right….

I think we’ll have to include Gray if May and Lux are off limits. I’ve already come to grips with losing Ruiz (after all, we have a dozen other good to excellent catchers in the system. They say Cartaya may be the best of them all.). On the other hand, I think that Gray may turn into something very special and it would pain me to lose him, although I’m prepared to do so. Gray has only been a pitcher for a short time and has made amazing progress. If the Pirates can get Ruiz, Gray and a couple of other pieces they will have done very well for themselves.
