Baseball writers selected Dodgers‘ shortstop Corey Seager as June’s National League Rookie of the Month on Saturday, giving the 22-year-old rookie his first career monthly award in what appears to be one of many down a long and very productive road.

Seager led all major league rookies with a .343 batting average, 35 hits, eight home runs, 20 runs scored, 69 total bases, and a .676 slugging percentage. In addition, he headed the NL rookie class with a .409 on-base percentage and eight doubles. His 13 RBI were the third-most among NL rookies last month.

Seager’s award is the first for a Dodgers rookie since Alex Guerrero was chosen Rookie of the Month in April of 2015.

Although he probably hasn’t earned the fans’ popular vote to start the 2016 All-Star Game, Seager continues to prove that he’s far and away the best hitter on the Dodgers, while setting himself apart from even the best rookies in the entire game.

Of the 82 games played by the Dodgers in 2016, Seager has appeared in 81 and is hitting .302/.360/.540 over 347 plate appearances with 54 runs scored, 40 RBI and 95 total hits, including 20 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs.

His 3.2 WAR leads all major league rookies, and his .900 OPS is second only to Aledmys Diaz of the Cardinals.

After initially being activated when the rosters expanded last September, the Charlotte native hit .337/.425/.561 in 113 plate appearances for 2015, and hasn’t yet looked back.

In May of this season, Seager’s seven home runs tied a Dodgers record for the most by a shortstop, and he now holds the record exclusively with the eight in the month of June.

Seager and infield partner Justin Turner were just the second pair of Dodgers with at least eight home runs in the same month in the last 12 years, joining Matt Kemp and Adrian Gonzalez in September 2014.

For earning the award, Seager will receive a specially designed trophy, appropriately engraved, in recognition of his accomplishment.
