Dodgers Acquire Cavan Biggio from Blue Jays

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Wednesday morning the acquisition of Cavan Biggio from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Braydon Fisher.

Biggio, 29, was designated for assignment on June 7 after appearing in 44 games for the Blue Jays. He hit .200 with four doubles, two homers and nine RBI this season with Toronto. He spent six seasons with the Blue Jays, slashing a combined .227/.343/.382 with 77 doubles, four triples, 48 homers and 176 RBI in 490 career games. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Notre Dame University.

In 2023, the lefty-hitting Biggio played 49 games at second base, 27 games in right field, 20 games at first base, 13 games at third base, eight games at designated hitter and one game at shortstop.

Biggio came up with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, igniting the hopes of a Toronto fan base of an exciting future. Some of these expectations were unfairly hoisted upon Biggio, the son of former MLB great Craig Biggio.

However, Biggio handled the good and bad days admirably. Throughout his tenure in Toronto, Biggio earned respect throughout the organization, making the decision to DFA him difficult for those involved.

Fisher, 23, was 2-1 with a 5.86 ERA in 15 games for Double-A Tulsa this season. He had 30 strikeouts in 19.0 innings with 15 walks and a .264 batting average against. He has been with the Dodgers five seasons, tossing a combined 228.2 innings in 134 games (12 starts) and an 18-14 mark with a 4.53 ERA. He was drafted by Los Angeles in the fourth round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Clear Falls High School.

The Dodgers have yet to announce a corresponding 40-man roster move at the time of this publication.

    1. At least he hits at the Mendoza line instead of the Taylor line lol. The message to Vargas is they have lost faith in him. Maybe they will give him a break and trade him. Unfortunately not worth much. Paxton continues to be a good back of rotation guy. Great value.Hoping they go to 6 man when Miller is ready. When the back of the line up gets on base the runs roll in. When they don’t oh well

  1. I think they had a spot available on the 40-man so no move necessary there.

Vargas back to OKC to make room on the 26-man. What a waste of a call up that was. Why bring him up to have him sit on the bench.

Biggio seems like a left handed (bat) version of CT3 and Kike. One or two of those three guys is not likely to be here after the deadline in July.

  2. Very frustrating to watch Taylor, Kike etc swing and miss , pop up or hit into double plays and kill rallies. Or not get on base so the big 4 or 5 can’t get RBI’s. There is no grit on this team. Yes they are winning and injured pitchers coming back will get stronger. But the playoffs are what’s important. Can this team generate runs against premier pitching where u must generate a run in a 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 game? We shall see

      1. Well that’s certainly an issue lol. The analytics are great for big samples 162 game season. But short series with dominant pitching you can be hosed! The philosophy of swing hard in case u hit it can be an issue as the Dodgers demonstrate every year in the playoffs. Many of us can remember coaches making us bunt and sacrifice with grounders to score or move men over. I remember them yelling muscle memory do it until u can do it in your sleep. One year the coach would bench you if u didn’t move the man. It’s strategic. Alston would yell at the player and then put them on the bench. Lasorda would let the player know they were not playing team ball. Roberts just sits there and smiles. He is so laid back he looks like a wax figure. He doesn’t challenge umpires. Or make them check the play. Pages looked safe the other day. Cmon show some fire get tossed.. Get the team fired up!

  3. so dodgers have finally acknowledged that Vargas is not major league material, or at least of the caliber of Kiki, ct3 or now biggio. I thought he was their one good prospect. I

Always wondered why his name never came up in trade rumors after his mlb debut. Let’s move on I guess.

    1. Vargas, by the team’s current definition is a left fielder or DH only.

CT3 plays left field, center field, 3rd base, shortstop and second base.

Kike plays those same five positions.

By sending Vargas down, it doesn’t mean they think less of him than the do the other two, all it says is that CT and Kike fill more needs right now.

Vargas might be back this year, might be the starting left fielder in 2025 or might be traded next week, but sending him down now only means they have 26 other guys who serve their needs better.

Now, Dodger fans can vehemently disagree with that, but unfortunately AF gets to make the final decision.

      1. Jeff I would agree with you if they hadn’t just traded for Biggio. He is just another kiki or ct. In the meantime they have one of the worst offensive outfields. I would rather have a young prospect with upside than the 3 with only downside.

      2. I’m not arguing the wisdom or lack thereof of this move, but Biggio bats left while CT, Kike and Vargas are all righty hitters.

Of course, when you’re hitting at the level of those three utility guys I’m not sure what difference that makes.

      3. lol. I guess when you have big holes at 2nd and 3rd and the outfield you need all the utility guys you can get even if they can’t quite reach the mendoza line. It will be interesting to see how far 5 free agents ca carry us this year compared to 4 free agents in past years. Let’s hope lux or Pages can show some progress this year because we definitely need a home grown in the lineup or our payroll will be crazy

      4. Both Lux and Pages have improved in the last couple of weeks. Question is, can they extend and improve on that. But at least they’re headed in the right direction.
