According to a team statement, the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday afternoon, recalled right-handed pitcher Reyes Moronta after placing right-handed pitcher Brusdar Graterol on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, backdated to July 11.
The 29-year-old Moronta returns for his fourth stint with the team and has appeared in 13 games for the Dodgers this season. In his 13 games, he is 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA (6 ER/14.2 IP) and 15 strikeouts. He is in his fifth Major League season with a combined 8-9 with a 2.76 ERA (45 ER/147.0 IP) and 177 strikeouts against 77 walks with San Francisco (2017-2021) and Los Angeles (2022). He was signed as a minor league free agent with the Dodgers on March 12, 2022.
Graterol, 23, heads to the injured list for the first time this season and the third time in his career. He has appeared in 37 games for the Dodgers, and he is 2-3 with a 3.35 ERA (15 ER/40.1 IP) and 35 strikeouts. In parts of four seasons with the Dodgers, he is combined 7-6 with a 3.80 ERA (45 ER/106.2 IP) and 85 strikeouts. He recorded his first career save on June 26 at Atlanta and he has recorded his last three save opportunities for the Dodgers.
Graterol was originally signed as an international free agent out of Calabozo, Venezuela on August 29, 2014, by the Minnesota Twins.
While Graterol’s numbers aren’t overly spectacular, his 37 appearances lead the entire team, followed by Evan Phillips and Alex Vesia with 35 apiece. Closer Craig Kimbrel has logged 32 appearances and Phil Bickford 31.
This latest bullpen injury could indicate the urgency to acquire at least one capable arm at the coming trade deadline. Blake Treinen continues to progress slowly, having thrown 36 pitches in a bullpen session on Wednesday.
The report on Treinen doesn’t indicate whether he was able to use all of his pitches in the workout or just fastballs, but the right-hander’s high pitch count is at least another sign that he’s making progress from the right shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since mid-April. The veteran reliever could soon be ready to face hitters, but don’t expect to see him return from the 60-day injured list until August.
In the meantime, the Dodgers look for a series win against the Cardinals on Thursday afternoon with southpaw Tyler Anderson getting the start. Here’s how skipper Dave Roberts filled out the lineup card:
First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m. Pacific.
Too bad about Bazooka. Moronta is running out of back-and-forth options. Maybe another reason they picked up Jake Reed yesterday.
You say the Dodgers are looking for a series split today. I think you meant to say series win.
Thanks for the edit! I only had 10 minutes to write on my afternoon break at work, so there are probably a dozen other typos in there, too. ☹️
Good write up Dennis. Appreciate your efforts… Really looking forward to Treinen coming back…
I don’t understand why you need a job Dennis.
The $1000/month subscription fee we each pay you should be enough to provide you with a nice living without having to hold down a second job.
Dodgers are 10 games better in the loss column vs the Padres. Incredible with the injuries and offensive issues. Hopefully Graterol’ shoulder is not serious. Curious to hear what the time line on Buehler is. Anyone heard anything??
I think they expect/hope to have him back towards the end of the season, but you know the Dodgers. Don’t believe anything until you see him out on a rehab assignment. As far as I know he hasn’t done any throwing yet and nothing is imminent.
Sorry to see Graterol go down. He could work more than one inning periodically.
Dodgers sign pitcher Hansel Robles to a minor league contract. We don’t have Hansel and Gretel but we do have Hansel and Hanser.
