The Dodgers on Tuesday afternoon selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Hudson will wear uniform No. 41.
Hudson, 31, who signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on March 30, has made five relief appearances with the OKC Dodgers this season and has yet to allow a hit in 4.2 innings, while striking out five batters. The veteran right-hander, who was traded to Tampa Bay from Pittsburgh on February 22, appeared in seven games with the Rays during Spring Training, allowing nine runs in 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.
In 2017, Hudson spent the entire season with the Pirates, his first year with the organization, as he set a career-high in appearances (71), which also tied for 11th most among National League relievers. He posted a 2-7 record with a 4.38 ERA (30 ER/61.2 IP) and struck out 66 batters against 33 walks, while limiting hitters to a .248 average.
The Lynchburg, Virginia, native has gone 37-30 with nine saves and has posted a 3.98 ERA in 270 career big league games (59 starts) over eight Major League seasons with the White Sox (2009-10), Diamondbacks (2010-16) and Pirates (2017). He has struck out 501 career batters against 178 walks, while holding the opposition to a .252 average, including a .247 mark against lefties. Hudson was originally selected by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft from Old Dominion University.
Buehler, who was recalled prior to last night’s contest, made his 2018 debut and his first career big league start against the Marlins. The 23-year-old allowed just four hits over 5.0 scoreless innings and struck out five batters, as he did not factor in the decision in the Dodgers 2-1 victory.
With the addition of Hudson, the Dodgers 40-man is now at 40 players.

If I understand the 26-man rule for doubleheaders correctly, they won’t have to wait 10 days to recall Buehler. They can add him for the doubleheader on Saturday. If they send him back down after the game on Saturday, the 10 day count continues with just the one day of interruption, although if there aren’t any injuries to starters, I’m assuming he’ll stay at OKC for a while.

Makes you wonder why they didn’t opt for the more traditional five-man bench with an eight-man bully instead of carrying nine relievers. Every time the game comes down to the wire I can almost feel Roberts wincing in regards to his shortage of position players.

I don’t know which registers higher on the Wince Meter, a short bench, or not having full confidence in your bp guys. Apparently Chargois, Fields and Stripling weren’t available last night, but if it was my decision I would have used Liberatore before Baez. Of course that’s easy to say after the fact.

Another game thrown away by our horrible management. And we can’t blame it all on Kike and Joc. As a matter of fact, the only outfielder that is carrying his weight right now is some old has-been we picked up named Kemp… But Joc is contributing little or nothing and he should be sent down so we can call up an outfielder who might help us for awhile. Sentimentally, I’d go with Toles, but since he’s on the DL, Verdugo or Ramos would be fine. Management isn’t even aware that Ramos exists, he’s the invisible man, so I guess it would be Verdugo by default. He should get a lot of playing time, relieving all three starting outfielders at least twice a week. Kemp needs the rest and Taylor and Puig aren’t setting the world on fire right now. That helps part of the problem but our path is never going to be smooth until we get rid of our really stupid manager. And that ain’t going to happen anytime soon…

It’s really frustrating when you have a hard time keeping up with a team that did the equivalent of our trading Turner, Bellinger, Seager and Taylor and still manages to somehow play us even through two games. But that’s baseball. You have to be a masochist to keep coming back for more. On the other hand, we seem to go through this kind of stuff every year and still get to October. I have no clue why Roberts has such loyalty to Baez but he really has worn out his welcome here. I’m sure the boos (even if deserved) aren’t helping any. It’s time to put him out of his (and our) misery and send him to OKC for a while or see what he would bring in a trade. You can’t keep using a guy when you have absolutely no idea what the results will be. The worst part of it is that sometimes he’ll come in and strike out everyone. Then the next time pitch like he has no clue what the strike zone is.

I agree with using either Verdugo or Toles over Joc. My guess is that they’re gonna baby Tolesy as he returns from this hamstring issue, though. This is Joc’s fourth year in the bigs, and I’m wondering how long management is gonna tolerate his mediocrity on the 25-man.

I get why Baez – he’s got one of the livest arms in the organization. I think his problem is between his ears. Stop throwing 98 down the middle and develop a two seamer you can hit the corners with. High and tigh low and away and he’s our 8th inning guy. I know he has that pitch as I’ve seen him use it, but, invariably he goes back to center cut cheese. Maddening.

I agree that he has a great arm and they even seem to have gotten him to develop another pitch or two. I see his problem as mechanics; he can’t consistently get the ball where he wants it, no matter what pitch he’s throwing. You can get away with great stuff and mediocre control in the minors but not in the bigs. And as I said in my previous post, he looks like a HOFamer for a few days and then reverts right back to horrible control. Just like with Joc, there may be some real promise, but how long do you ride with just the promise.

I’m guessing last year at this time we were feeling about the same. Remember, they didn’t even get to .500 until April 29th and it was BB (Before Bellinger). This team just seems to like to run from behind. Hopefully that will be the case again this year.

Can’t believe we lost 2 out of 3 to the freakin marlins, to add insult to injury, they kicked Kershaws’ butt. I sure hope we play better on the road trip.

Maybe I’m naive but I still believe we are good enough to win the West. Win it all? I don’t have the confidence in the pitching staff to say that. I said the same thing last year though, and they did ok. Now the starters are older and the pen is different. Kershaw looks like he is pitching with the weight of the organization on his shoulders and the other starters, how ever many there may end up being, can only be counted on for 5 innings. Maybe.
Bellinger, Taylor and Seager will eventually hit. Grandal will eventually cool off. Joc and Kiké will do what they do, Puig and Kemp will contribute. We’ll score, of that I’m certain. Will we pitch well enough? Yeah. Sure. Maybe.
Long season. We may stumble along for a while. If we are still around .500 in mid July then I’d make a move or two. Right now I wouldn’t pay to see these guys. Stay home and stream some movies. It would better entertainment than re-runs at Dodger Stadium.

Anything can happen in the West. I’ve been saying for months that management will try to upgrade the rotation at the summer deadlines, so long as the remaining salary fits within the threshold.

I’m sure we will play better, but I think the division is quite a bit better than it was last year. They didn’t do anything to make the team better, so we gave the rest of the teams a chance to close the gap.
I sure hope they do something with their pressious luxury tax reset next off season.

In all seriousness I was never really thinking the Dodgers needed a Harper,but maybe they do need somebody like him. Is it fair to ask Cody, or Cory to carry this team, or expect them to be, the man. I’m not sure if they,re ready to take on that role for this team.

Harper hasn’t carried the Nats anywhere past the NLCS, and they’ve had a ton of talent, too.

I think right now Turner is that guy, but I’m not sure how many more years we’ll be able to say that. Seager doesn’t strike me as the “leader” type, as good a player as he is. Bellinger, with a few more years under his belt, maybe.
