McCreery is a 25-year-old left-handed pitcher who pitched in one game for the Braves last season back in early August.
Standing at a towering 6’9’’, McCreery struck out 71 batters in 54.2 innings last season in the minor leagues while holding hitters to just a .242 batting average.
Unfortunately, his lone appearance in the majors didn’t go very well, as he finished with four hits and two earned runs allowed in that one inning of work.
McCreery was drafted out of high school in 2011 in the 14th round by the Minnesota Twins but instead opted to go to college.
He attended Azusa Pacific University and signed with the Los Angeles Angels after being drafted in the 22nd round by them in 2014.
In May 2016, McCreery was traded by the Angels to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Jhoulys Chacin, who coincidentally started two games for the Milwaukee Brewers against this Dodgers in this season’s NLCS.
Over the course of McCreery’s minor league career, he has pitched in 133 games, thrown 189 innings, struck out 243 batters, and registered a 3.42 ERA.
In order for the Dodgers to make room on their 40-man roster for McCreery, the team decided to designate Pat Venditte for assignment.
Venditte pitched in 15 games for the Dodgers last season, throwing 11 innings and finishing with a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.
Venditte is perhaps best known around the league as an ambidextrous pitcher, who forced rule changes in order to deal with his unusual talent.
The rule adopted was that a pitcher must visually indicate which hand he intends to pitch with before an at-bat begins and can only change hands after certain events.
The pitcher can change hands after the batter is retired, the batter becomes a runner, the inning ends, the batter is substituted, or the pitcher gets injured.
If the pitcher injuries his hand and is forced to pitch with the other hand in the middle of an at-bat, the pitcher cannot use the other hand to pitch at any point the rest of that game.
Venditte has appeared in 56 games during his career, throwing 64.2 innings, registering a 4.45 ERA, and a 1.28 WHIP.
Throughout his career, Venditte has usually chosen to throw righty against a right-handed batter and lefty against a left-handed batter.
He has faced 278 batters in his career. 129 of those have been righty against a righty, and 108 of them have been lefty against a lefty.
Venditte has utilized the typical platoon advantage for himself in 237 out of the 278 plate appearance against him.
As a right-handed pitcher against right-handed hitters, he has a .259 BA against and a .372 OBP against. As a lefty against lefty batters, he has a .190 BA against and a .231 OBP against.
McCreery is an intriguing young pitcher, and the Dodgers are hoping he’ll be able to make an impact at the major league level quickly.
