Max Muncy Named to 2019 National League All-Star Squad

Deservedly so, this afternoon Dodgers infielder Max Muncy was named to the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which will take place on Tuesday, July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Muncy is replacing Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon of the Washington Nationals and will join teammates Cody Bellinger, Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu at the 90th annual All-Star festivities.

The 29-year-old Rendon has been resistant to the All Star game all season, saying he’d rather rest and spend time with his family than play and travel during the four-day break in the middle of a grueling 162-game season.

Muncy, 28, will make his first trip to the All-Star Game after competing in the 2018 Home Run derby contest. He is slashing .276/.379/.921 with 21 homers and 59 RBI this season.

Since May 1, Muncy is hitting .290 (58-for-200) with 16 homers and 42 RBI. The former Baylor Bear is among the National League leaders in homers (10th), RBI (13th), OBP (14th, .379) and OPS (14th, .921). On the road, he boasts the seventh-best OPS in all of baseball (.995) and has amassed 14 homers and 36 RBI away from Dodger Stadium.

Last year, Muncy came out of absolutely nowhere, hitting .263/.391/.582 with 17 doubles, 35 long balls and 79 RBI over 395 AB in 137 games. He spent his entire 2017 campaign on the Dodgers’ farm at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Los Angeles will have the five representatives at the game, the most in the NL and second in the majors to the Houston Astros, who will have six players at the game.

  5. Co granulation sto Max, he more than deserves this award although I agree with Jeff in that I wish he would be like Rendon and rest over the break. I think we all want to see Joc in the derby but other than that I wish our guys would stay home.

    Now….onto the bad. It has been coming to my attention ever so slowly and now Manny Machado has slapped me in the face with it. He bet his contract with an LA fan that the Padres would win it all before us. Now I don’t believe that but he’s 100% right. This young team is going to give us hell in a very short time. Once the top guys on their farm graduate to join the already impressive group of kids on the roster now, the Dodgers are going to have their hands full.

      Yeah. You’ve been reading it here for weeks Alex.

      The Padres have it going on and if fans get behind them and start showing up that franchise will have a lot to offer free agents. They have a ton of talent in the system including pitching, 6 of whom are in the MLB Top 100. McKenzie Gore is rated #3, higher than Kershaw was. They have former Dodger management talent all over the place. They have coaches and scouts, including Pacific Rim operations director Acey Kohrogi. Barajas, Schumaker, Hoffman.. the list is long

      The attendance down there will be inching up. They are currently 14th, averaging 28,667. They draw better on the road which is insane. Of the top drawing teams in the league only the Mets do that.

      The Padres are going to be a fun team to watch. Hell, they already are.

  6. Injury report. Gonsolin and Smith are headed to the IL. Smith will be on the MLB IL as he has not played since he was sent down. Strained oblique. Gonsolin’s hammy is barking, so he is being shut down. Pollock, Freese and Seager will rejoin the team in Boston. All 3 are scheduled to be activated then, which means Beaty, Garlick and Rios will be headed back to OKC. Beaty has been a pretty steady guy. Garlick has not done much lately, and Rios has not had a lot of opportunities. Bullpen despite the hiccup by Garcia last night has been much better, especially Kelly. But the bats were put to sleep by Padre pitching. Despite the fact that Verdugo and Taylor at the top of the line up had 4 of the Dodgers 6 hits, the middle of the lineup, Turner, Belli, Muncy and Kike, went 1-15 with a walk. They also left 9 runners stranded. Verdugo and Taylor stranded 6 between them. There was no clutch hitting at all. 1-8 with runners in scoring position. Turner struck out 2 more times, that’s 7 in his last 12 at bats and popped out the other 2 times. Something does not look right with him. They hit a lot of weak fly balls last night. Even the ones that looked like they had really been hit hard were not. Pederson just missed hitting one out as Renfroe caught it right in front of the wall in right and Garlick hit one that was caught at the wall also. Give a lot of credit to the Pads staff for shutting down a hot offense. Lauer has been very good in everyone of his starts against the Dodgers. The Padres are a much improved team to be sure and they have some solid prospects in the minors. But they are a long way from being the Dodgers. Machado may just lose that contract. Their outfield defense is porous, their bullpen is not that great yet. Yates is nails, but his 2 losses have both been to the Dodgers. They have a ways to go before they match LA on the field. And until they prove it at the MLB level, prospects are nothing but prospects.
