The Dodgers on Thursday afternoon recalled right-handed pitchers JT Chargois and Josh Sborz from Triple-A Oklahoma City. To make room on the 25-man roster, the team placed left-handed pitcher Rich Hill on the 10-day injured list with left forearm strain and optioned infielder Matt Beaty to Oklahoma City.
Chargois, 28, returns for his third stint with the club. In his first stop, he tossed 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits in two games. The former Rice Owl has posted a 1-2 mark with a 2.17 ERA (7 ER/29.1 IP) and 34 strikeouts in 24 games with Oklahoma City. The righty is in his third Major League season and a has a combined 3-5 record with a 4.11 ERA (26 ER/57.0 IP) in 66 Major League contests.
Sborz, 25, rejoins the club after being optioned on April 20. The righty did not appear in a game and his next appearance will be his Major League debut. This season, Sborz has made 25 appearances for Oklahoma City, going 2-3 with a 4.91 ERA (16 ER/29.1 IP) and 37 strikeouts.
Hill, 39, was removed from last night’s game in the second inning and will be placed on the IL for the second time this season. He missed the first month of the season with a left knee sprain. Since returning on April 28, he is 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA (15 ER/58.0 IP) and 61 strikeouts. The southpaw is in his 15th Major League season and is a combined 65-42 with a 3.84 ERA (397 ER/931.2 IP) and 993 strikeouts.
Beaty, 26, appeared in 23 games for the Dodgers, batting .286 (16-for-56) with one homer and nine RBI. The infielder clubbed his first career homer on Friday night in a 5-3 victory against the Cubs. In his five minor league seasons, he is a career .308 (438-for-1421) hitter with 34 homers and 215 RBI.
According to the latest news, Hill says he has been diagnosed with a flexor tendon strain. but he’s not sure what “grade” strain. The veteran lefty told reporters on Thursday afternoon that he doesn’t expect to pick up a ball for three to four weeks.
Considering Hill’s early exit on Wednesday night, the move makes sense as the bullpen was stretched thin. What’s more, with Julio Urias and Ross Stripling set to eat as many innings as possible on Thursday, a 10-man relief crew could come in handy.
There has not been an indication as to how skipper Dave Roberts plans on handling the rotation moving forward.

Sorry to see Beaty shipped out. He certainly did what was asked of him here. This 10 man bullpen won’t last for long and I would imagine that Sborz will be back in OKC within the next few days. I can understand the move for now based on the bullpen game last night and again tonight.
Going forward, does this mean Smith comes back to replace the extra pitcher? Do they put someone on the IL so they can officially bring Beaty back before the normal waiting period is up? As I’ve said before, if AF plans to get a high-end reliever, I think he needs to grab Smith immediately because many of the better relievers are pitching for teams who may not be eliminated from the wildcard for quite awhile. Let’s just do this tonight before the Giants leave town.

Frankly I’m surprised we got as much out of Hill as we have. It’s not even July. There are no doubt more breakdowns coming, AND the expected paid vacations we know are coming. We have depth because we are certain to need it. I think it’s part of the plan.

Well, that was not very pretty at all. Garlick, Barnes, and Pederson went deep. Pederson played an inning at first, but Roberts put Cody where he belongs in crunch time, and he made a game saving play. I still would much rather see him there full time. They have plenty of outfielders, but only one elite first baseman. But it won’t happen. Kike got hit twice and singled, but his BA is still down around the Mendoza line. Lead is at 10 and the second place Rockies come in without their SS. Story on the 10 day IL. Tonight shows that the bullpen can do a decent job sometimes, but can melt down too. Sborz walked a guy in the 9th and a double brought him home. Then Jansen poured some gas on the fire. Was a very tense 9th inning. Sborz will be back at OKC by Monday. Maybe even tomorrow. Former Dodger Rubby Delarosa sold to a Japanese team by the D-Backs.

If Roberts had any sense, the kid would have been out of the game after his perfect inning. But no, Roberts leaves him in to close the game and a walk and a double later he is gone. Kenley comes in and proceeds to stink up the joint allowing the kids second run to come in and there is you 27.00 ERA. Had it not been for Bellinger’s great play, and he was out SCOOP, they would have probably ended up losing this game.

Right now Jansen is not an elite closer. He’s throwing slower with less movement and less control. He no longer has swing and miss stuff which is crucial for an elite closer. That’s the reason we have to get a second closer and pay the price. This year is probably our best shot to win a WS and the hole is obvious. We sign a guy like Smith or Hand and if Jansen can’t turn it around then he loses his closer role. We won’t beat the Yankees or Astros with this bullpen as it is! Let’s see if AF makes the big move again at the deadline for a top reliever! Good to have you back bear!

I agree with that take Rich, and am an advocate for picking up Smith or Hand. I don’t know what’s wrong with Jansen but it may be a matter of the guy is just past his prime. If we play like we did last night we may not make it to a series against Houston. We have time, but to ignore an obvious problem is poor management. I believe something will be done. What that something is, I haven’t a clue. Sborz and Chargois was the latest move. Gulp. Stripling? Doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Kenley is still our closer and always will be. How do I know? He told me so.
We did find out something important last night. Kenley doesn’t do well when rested.

All kidding aside, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that we can’t go into the post season having to depend on KJ. If he becomes the old Kenley again, great. If not, we need to have a viable option and there is no one on the roster at present to fill that position. AF might trade for an elite reliever who could totally flame out, but he needs to do it and take his chances.

Just so you know Jefe, I am not all warm and cuddly. I was being nice for a while, but when the situation calls for it, I am all in. Hell, I am in facebook jail for the 3rd time in 4 months. And that’s for a 2 year old post! But that site is run by a cupcake and his commie buddies are the community standards cops. That’s a horse of a different color. Barnes made you look foolish Rich simply because the kid has hit most everywhere he has played. He had just come off of the 10 day IL, so there was going to be some rust. He also has a new swing courtesy of the hitting guru’s. Kike may have got on the old fashioned way. I think the second one was intentional since Garlick had just gone deep. But Kike is still not hitting. As long as he continues to try and pull everything, he will not be that good, and leadoff is definitely not his bailiwick. Now, are there any 2 more boring announcers in baseball than Davis and Hershiser? They are painful to listen to. Hershiser is a fountain of useless information and insight, and Davis is about as informative as the small print on a contract. Davis drones on and on and is about as close to a Joe Buck clone as you can find. You never know what you have lost until it is gone forever. I personally wish that Davis was gone, and take Orel with you. Garciaparra is a much better analyst. Neverett has been ok when he has been on the broadcast. But the days of Vin and Scully are gone forever. I have an idea, get rid of these two boring souls and hire Hank Azaria. His characterization of a announcer who is under the gun and considered a pariah is classic. Anything is better than D and H show.

Yes, it’s quite obvious that you aren’t all warm and cuddly. I just enjoy “poking the Bear” every once in awhile.
With regard to your views on Joe and Orel, I don’t agree. Yes, no one is Vinnie, but I really like Joe and I think he and Orel make a very good team (although Orel can get long winded at times). I really enjoyed when they had both those guys plus Nomar in the booth together, because I thought it was interesting to get both the hitter and pitcher viewpoint on various situations. I’m guessing they thought it was just too much for most fans and for whatever reason chose Orel over Nomar. In any case, when I hear what else is out there, I’m happy with our tv broadcast guys.
I’d be interested to hear what the rest of you think. Agree more with Bear or with me?

Jansen has not been elite for the last couple of years. Just look at the number of HR’s allowed and that is obvious for all to see. He does not do well in back to back games. Don’t look now, but Kelly’s ERA is bellow 7. Baez has been nails. There are a couple of options they can use. But most likely the best option is go outside of the organization and make a trade. I think Ol Andy signed Kelly with the idea of him being that second closer. If Kelly gets back on track he definitely has the stuff to do that job, and he is here for 2 more years after this one. I would love to see them get Hand. But it will take some good pieces for that to happen.

I’m not a Hershiser fan and Davis would be tolerable if the color guy was more colorful. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Don Sutton’s kid Daron was great with Arizona. And having lived up north and listened to Kruk and Kuip, then to Arizona to listen to Sutton, Berthiaume and Brenly I can say with conviction the Dodgers announcers are way behind those guys. I’m with Bear on this one – I think a change is needed.
It’s to the point I get nervous about the 9th with less than a 3 run lead. I’d rather see Jansen as the bridge. Expensive bridge, but he’s lost his mojo. Maybe he gets it back over the summer. Hope so.
